My Wife and I are planning our relocation to Rochester for October 2015. I was born and raised in Greece until my family moved to SoCal in 1969. I came back for my Senior year in high school and graduated from Greece-Arcadia HS in 1976.

SoCal is NOT the paradise everyone thinks it is and I am but a growing faction of disenchanted people pulling stakes. I would love to settle back in Greece or that area. I am a 56 year old white man and my Wife is a 48 year old black female. We are both educated (she just received her Doctorate in Education and is also a Minister) and what could be considered a middle class couple.

Here is a big question, and please be honest but respectful in your responses. Are there many bi-racial relationships seen in the Rochester area these days? If so, how do they seem to be received?

Thank you for reading and responding.

I think you would be fine and in terms of areas to look into, I'd say that parts of Greece, Gates, Chili, Irondequoit, Brighton and Henrietta would be the best bets for at least decently diverse, solid areas in the suburbs. If you don't mind the city, look in the Southeastern Quadrant.

Thanks ckhthankgod...those are the very areas we are considering. I visited in 2005 and again in 2012 and for the most part the area hasnt changed much since 1976. It always felt like home to me and I hope my Wife will grow to feel the same. When we met she was planning on a move to CT.

No problem and I was thinking, given what you mentioned in your first post, the area of the SE Quadrant by the University of Rochester and the Colgate Rochester Crozier Divinity School may be a nice fit in terms of like minded and other types of people, the type of neighborhood you are looking for and things to do nearby. Neighborhoods like Upper Mount Hope, Highland Park and Swillburg are the ones that come to mind or nearby areas of Brighton could work in that regard too.

I notice that you live in La Verne, which has a college. So, that could be another reason why that area could appeal to both of you.

I agree with ckhthankgod. You will have absolutely no issues in a biracial relationship in Rochester. I work in a white collar job and one of my colleagues is in a bi-racial relationship. And I know others too. So it's fairly common and nobody gives it a second thought.

i was born and grew up in greece too(I would've went to athena but we moved). I live in socal right now and am moving back within 2 months. i agree that socal isn't all that great. too brown here and no rain. i prefer the rain, clouds, and seasons (especially fall).

we are looking to move back to the greece area as well. good luck.

I recently came across the following resource that shows an effort to decrease ethnocentrism in suburbs of rochester. http://www.monroe.edu/UrbanSuburban.cfm?subpage=82
