Big news. The 2019 Senior PGA Championship and the 2023 PGA Championship Tournaments will be coming to Rochester and Oak Hill CC.

Rochester is not a major league sports town, with the exception of golf which we are definitely major league. The PGA Championship is like the super bowl of professional golf. And Oak Hill CC will tie the record of hosting the PGA Championship 4 times now. Not to mention all the other majors it has hosted such as the Senior PGA Championship twice now, and the Ryder Cup and the US Open 3 times as well.

A recent article in the Rochester Business Journal states that the 2013 PGA Championship brought $102 million into the local economy and 28 hours of INTERNATIONAL coverage that reached 500 million households. That is a lot of money and exposure for one event not to mention that the demographics are pretty good too.

Does anyone have any financial stats for what a major league sport brings to a city?

This may give an idea in terms of the Bills: Forbes: Bills least valuable NFL franchise

Thanks. That's close to what I was thinking for gate entry ($49 million). Average $87 per ticket. Hard to believe that they get about $250 million in advertising and merchandise though. Unfortunately the ticket revenue comes out of local pockets, so that part of their revenue is kind of a wash.
