What are some Rochester area local restaurant chains? What are some highlights on their menu and have they expanded beyond the Rochester area? I'm restricting this to a minimum of three locations in total with the original and "headquarters" based in the Rochester area.
I'm making this in reaction to the Chick-fil-a and Papa John's thread.
Yep Dibella's was started in Rochester. This thread was definitely an interesting idea, because somebody might not give it much thought but Rochester has quite a few local chains.
As far as the biggest restaurant chains, I'd say Dibella's is probably number 1 since it's in 6 states. Abbott's would be second as it's in 5 states, and Mark's is third since it has a number of locations throughout NYS outside of Rochester too.
And for a chain store in general, obviously Wegmans is #1 having 97 stores throughout the NE. And I might argue that it can even be lumped in with the restaurants too because it has an amazing bakery, cafe, deli, subshop, buffet food, etc.
Oh, also another local chain I just thought about is Charlie's. Which I'm surprised I forgot considering it's one of my favorite lol.
Dibella's sounds interesting--I love a good sandwich.
If possible, it'd be great to mention what the chain serves and possibly a quick review/favorite dish.
DiBella's is great. If you can, visit their Henrietta location as it's more than just a sub shop, but a full service market/deli. I always get "The Godfather" sub which consists of Genoa salami, capicola and spicy ham. I load it up with lettuce, tomato, onion, olives, cucumbers, mayo, mustard and Swiss cheese. Not a huge fan of sub oil but thats a popular, perhaps standard option. It's sloppy, it's terrible for you, but I'll be damned if it's not one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. Interestingly enough, Wegmans subs taste nearly identical to DiBella's and are great too. They have a version of what I described called "Danny's Favorite" although I always assumed he had a different favorite not listed on the menu...

As I understand it, Wegman's bought the recipe for the bread, and that gave DiBella's the $$ to expand.
