I have owned rental property on Mt Vernon, which crosses Caroline, for four years and have had no problems. The area is generally quite good. Is she near the Lutheran Church? The southwedge gets shadier when you go west of South Avenue, but this side of South is pretty good.
There was a fatal stabbing outside a bar that used to be at the corner of Caroline and Meigs (since shut down) about two years ago or so. This occurred very late at night. It was a very unusual incident for the area.
This area is a nice area. Going further down South into the city is a bit shadier but Caroline is a pretty safe street. Very quiet at night and nice places to eat and shop at.
Caroline Street is a pretty decent area of the city. Really the whole southeastern quadrant of the city is nice. Caroline is sort of in between Southwedge and Swillburg...two of the more long-standing decent middle class neighborhoods in that part of the city.
It's relatively safe. I lived on Oakland St for 5 years and I used to walk my dog at all hours of the day and night. I only had a couple of problems (and all involved people in cars).
That said...
There were problems there beyond the stabbing at the bar in October of 2005 (which was an accident waiting to happen, I was walking my dog by there about an hour before it went down and there was a huge crowd drinking outside the bar).
My next door neighbors were robbed at gunpoint in 2006 and there were a few other robberies as well (enough that people circulated flyers warning about them). I had someone try to break into my house once (foiled thanks to the previous owners installing plexiglass inside the glass of the front door) and I had someone break into my car, but both of those were years ago (2002 or so).
I'm not trying to scare you, just pointing out my experiences. It really isn't that bad of a neighborhood, she should be fine. I miss it actually, most of the people were friendlier than here in Henrietta.
