Park Ave would be my choice! It's very hip, lots of shops, nice quality built homes. It really is the hippest section of Rochester. You will see all walks of life there! Lots of bars! Shops, eats, it's great. The only concern is crime and schools. Crime is high, and the schools are bad. But for a single man your age, no problem. Invest in a security system if there is not one in the home you buy. If I did not have young kids, I would love to live there! You are in the center of town almost, and in driving and walking distance to just about any thing you might like. It really is cool.

But you have to have a open mind. As there is also a very large gay and lesbian community there. You will also see some punks, and homeless people too. But also every other types too! Young, old, white, black, rich, poor. None of this should bother you. If any of it does then this is not a area for you. If you enjoy the city life and every thing that comes with it, it's great!

Are you saying there's crime on Park Ave? I have been looking for crime maps of Rochester, and the few I've seen haven't shown crime in that neighborhood.

Crime is more car break-ins, breaking and entering, criminal mischief type stuff than violent crime.

Would you say it's safe to walk home from, say, the Irish bar at night to your house or apartment a couple of blocks away? Or are you always looking over your shoulder anywhere in the city?

I just have a hard time picturing getting jumped on Park Ave or East Avenue.

Definitely, there are very few places in Rochester and even less in the suburbs where you have to live in fear of this and with a little research you won't end up in any of them. Unless you are a troublemaker in a bar, most likely will not happen. I've spent a lot of time in Boston and I would say the bar scenes are pretty much similar in this respect (don't get me wrong, the bar scene is much more vibrant in Boston with all the colleges and young people, but safety wise similar). Also, without a car, you probably eliminate 95% of the risk of being a crime victim in the Park Ave. area.

I would agree. Unless you start trouble, you won't have to worry. I used to know a girl that worked at a bar on Monroe ave and she didn't have any troubles walking home alone after work. I know a few years ago Boston had some trouble with random persons getting jumped and beat up on Lansdowne street while walking out of bars. You won't have to worry about anything like that here.

So, Kingsfan:
I know this message was a year old now...but did you ever find a bocce ball league? I'm Italian American of the same age and moving to Rochester in the next couple of months. Would love to join once as I lived in Little Italy and would miss it.
Hope your transition to Rochester was a good one!
