The "cliff notes", does anybody know of an audio repair facility that could fix a cassette player?
The "long version"......A number of years ago, back when my area used to experience somewhat regular power outages, lasting from 5 to 30 minutes, my wife suggested that we have a battery powered radio in the house, just in case this was a real emergency, and there were important "public service announcements" that we should be aware of.
So, telling me to go shopping, is like handing me the keys to a candy store, and given that kind of encouragement, I feel it's obviously a time to "go big or stay home". Considering the obvious safety angle, but at the same time, being somewhat of an audiophile, I purchased a JVC boom box, which actually could run on batteries, but at the same time, it provided big, clear sound.
Under normal circumstances, I kept the radio indoors, in my basement workshop. I wound up liking the unit so much, I decided to purchase one to keep at work. Yes, this was quite some time ago, I've since retired, and both of the radios now reside in my basement.
That's the backstory.
A number of years ago, when cassette tapes were a popular medium, I borrowed several vinyl LPs from a friend, ones that were rare, and I really enjoyed, and I recorded them on to cassettes. Recently, I was working in the basement, had the radio on, and remembered those cassettes, and put one into the boom box, hoping to listen to the tape.
Long story short, the tape wouldn't play. The unit clicked 3 times, and nothing. I removed/reinstalled the tape, hit "play", again, and again, 3 "clicks", then nothing. Thinking it was just that radio, I pulled out the other radio, and the same scenario occurred! I dropped JVC customer service an e-mail looking for advice, and all they said was to box up the radio and send it to a JVC dealer/repair station in Georgia.
I'm reluctant to send it that far, to a place I'm unfamiliar with, plus this radio weighs almost 20 pounds! Shipping back and forth won't be cheap, especially if they can't fix it. Does anybody know of someplace in the Rochester area that works on older audio gear?
Thanks, but not a good solution to my problem. I'm not talking about a $29.95 cassette player. I'm dealing with a "serious" boombox, which has a tuner section that functions properly, a CD section that functions properly, and a sound system that produces a BIG sound. The cassette section is what isn't working, and that's what I'd like to repair.
Are you 100% sure the problem is with the cassette players and not the cassette tape itself? Do you have access to any other cassette players to try or do you have any other cassette tapes to try in your boom boxes?

I have a dual cassette player/recorder, as part of my stereo set-up. The two tapes that I've tried unsuccessfully, in the boom box, both play in the other player.
