I am moving to RIT and would like to rent an apartment in a neighborhood nearby. Does anyone has experiences with this or any suggestions? I am looking for a 1 br apartment at about $700 in a safe neighborhood. Appreciate any information.

I am just looking for a 1br in a safe neighborhood. 10 to 20 mins drive is OK. It will be great if it is on bus line. Thanks.

Will you have a car... or only take the bus?

I had friends in college who lived in Winton Village on Winton Road... not too far from RIT if you have a car- straight down Jefferson.

Most places in Henrietta or Brighton are OK. Your biggest 'safety' issues will probably be on campus, but that would be more to do with car break-ins (I knew lots of people who had their cars broken into on campus when I went there).

Is there a reason you aren't staying on campus? Have the on campus rents gone up that much? It's easier to walk to class as catch a bus.

It is actually located in the town of Henrietta. So, you should be fine. Plenty of shopping not too far away from campus as well. Here is a streetview of the area: Google Maps

Yeah, you're not going to run into any danger in henrietta. The only problem with henrietta is that it's...henrietta. Meaning that (while there are some nice residential areas) for the most part it's a combo of faceless subdivisions and commercial sprawl. Don't get me wrong, I have some friends living in henrietta near the brighton border who absolutely love it, but it's not for everybody. If you care at all about aesthetics and the whole urban-living thing, you won't like it. So, if you have a car, pretty much any neighborhood on the Southeast side will put you within a 10-15 min drive of the RIT campus. For 700 a month you could get a great 1 or 2 bedroom in the South Wedge, which is my favorite neighborhood (there's a lot of resturaunts, cool shops, bars and a boatload of college students living there, if any of that matters to you) it's perfectly safe and closer to RIT than most of the other southeast districts. And there's always Monroe Ave, Park Ave, NOTA, etc, you can look into those neighborhoods on other threads in the Rochester Area forum. Unfortunately, it takes like an hour to get to RIT from downtown by bus; even though you just take 24 without making any transfers for reasons that are not entirely clear to me it takes 51 minutes to travel like 6-7 miles (according to google maps, anyway) on that particular bus line. If you want city living, and I'd recommend it to singles, college students, people like that, the South Wedge is your best bet. Otherwise, Henrietta and Brighton are both perfectly safe. Brighton will be a lot nicer, but also more expensive than henrietta.
