I was also thinking of relocating as well. I live in San Antonio, Texas and there is no support system for people with asperger syndrome. I can relate to dealing with intolerant people, plus I am Pakistani and have been looked at with suscpicion. I have come across quite a few intolerant folks, although most of the people here are kind. I am looking for cities, equiped with better facilities to help people with asperger syndrome. I should look up more information on Rochester and other places. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
And electing another reactionary, fundamentalist politician on the national ticket will just make matters worse. NY state goes democratic, every time.
Since Reagan, that is true. Of course we had a republican gov. for many years until recently, but he was really a tax and spend something else. NY is not in good shape financially due to overwhelming mandated social programs. City, state and town budgets are busted. I work with these folks regularly and it is not pretty, believe me.
As far as acceptance of gays is concerned, my area in rural upstate is quite republican and gays do extremely well here. They run businesses and live and work in our communities. And yes, we are very Christian, so the label someone is trying to pin on Christians as not being tolerant to a gay person does not hold water with me. That accusation displays intolerance to Christians. I won't go Biblical here, but believe me, you won't have an issue.
Obviously, the more liberal areas are going to be within the cities. Some towns that closely surround the cities, as mentioned, are more left leaning. But don't rule out some of the more rural areas. Property is less expensive, the tax rates are lower and the schools are all pretty good, even for those with special needs.
If you have specific questions, I would be happy to help you.
Christians LOVE to say they LOVE THE SINNER and HATE THE SIN.
Don't even PRETEND Christians aren't anti-gay. Maybe you aren't. But the vast majority of Christians proudly to point to the bible as justification for their intolerance and hatefulness.
