We are moving to the Rochester area from Fort Worth, TX for a consulting job that lasts only about 6 months. We are originally from Chicago and can go two speeds, really pedestrian (cafes, bookstores, etc) or very secluded (Last year we had no neighbors except roadrunners, coyotes and bobcats.)
We are beginning to look now for something that is only a 6 month lease and around, at the most, a 20 minute drive to Mendon. Any leads on where I should begin to look and what price range we should expect? Also we are homeschoolers, so we are pretty mobile at this point.
Ideally (Read- never gonna happen) we could find an old house that backs up to national forest and a cafe is three blocks away. It could happen.
I would recommend looking in the East/Park Avenue area (14607 and portions of 14610 zip codes) for starters. This is the closest you will find to the cafe district that has grown up around the North Loop area of Chicago. You could rent a 3 bedroom apartment in a sprawling turn of the century mansion for about $1,000 to $1,500 depending on the amenities and location. For rural areas I would check out properties in the Honeyoye Falls/Lima school district as this encompasses Mendon. The town of Honeyoye Falls is very quaint. Not sure about rents there but you should be able to find a 3 bedroom house for $1,000 to $1,500. You should also check out Pittsford, the most upscale suburb of Rochester as some of the lots are very private, multi-acreaage affairs and the village center is as quaint as any other in the US. This could be your perfect scenario. A three bedroom home could go from $1,200 to upwards of $3,000 depending on the amenities.
please don't take any offense to this...just a friendly suggestion...nobody calls the area Upper State...some call it Upstate (or used to), but that generally applies to the area directly north of New York City. Rochester is actually in Western New York...
