Oh no. The original Pontillo's is closed? I suppose there are some self-centered people who don't get why that's a big deal but it is.

Tom's Original out in Ontario, with the yummiest, cheesiest cheeseburger I've ever had, has been taken over by the Bill Grey syndicate. The burgers are now the slightly-better-than-mediocre Rochester corporate burger, and worse, they cleaned out the decades of accumulated decorative junk and even got rid of the vintage menu/price sign. The place has been sanitized, homogenized, and made safe for suburban weenies.
But there is more.
Paolo's Burrito joint on the origin on East Henrietta Road is closing. Now where are we going to get great burritos, great help-yourself chips and salsa, and exactly the right environment?
Businesses come and go all the time man. When I first moved here there was a good mexican place on Buffalo rd. It could rival what I had down south. But they closed up, from what I heard they forgot thier green cards. So another opened, wasn't nearly as good, but they closed up again supposidly for the same reason.
I hear Ralphs is good for burgers, although I have never tried. I had a good burger at Sticky Lips the other day called the trash heap. It was basically a garbage plate on a burger: lettuce, spinage, mushrooms, cheese, onions, french fries (on the burger), plus the meat. Take that Burger King.

I completely understand what you are talking about.I've only been in the area since October and before that Long Island and NYC.Through my life local delis,ice cream shops,etc...that we loved for their unique quality have disappeared.It's like going back to a place you haven't been in 20 years and having fond memories of a few places and then they're not there.Unfortunately our economy has hurt significantly the smaller businesses especially.
The problem is that commercial success and quality are almost mutually exclusive. By the capitalist standard the best food available is MacDonalds.
Not that I should have to explain this to anybody.

I agree to an extent. There are still plenty of mom and pop places that have been successful through the years that haven't changed. Places like Schallers, Don's original , don & bobs. There are also a good number of delis that have been around forever that still give great quality.
But then you have places like Marks pizza. I remember getting pizza from them in the village of Webster 10-15 years ago and getting a great meal. Since then, they have grown and now have those automatic assembly line ovens that make the pizza taste like crap.

I've never been a fan of the Garbage Plate but I really liked the one I got at Vic and Irv's. The worst one was at Don's Original.
Re Pizza, does everyone know that Bay Goodman is operating in a little shop at Winton and Blossom? There are all kinds of pizza but theirs is a good kind and of course Bay Goodman is a Rochester Hall of Famer.
yea, my family almost **** a brick after they found out bay goodman re-opened. It was the staple place for our family some years back.
