I would like to get some input about Rochester. I am visiting Niagra Falls and Canada about a week from Thanksgiving. I am flying into NYC and plan on driving to there.
How is the weather that time of the year?
Will there be enough bad weather to cause problems driving to Canada?
Where is it safe to stay in Rochester since I don't want to be driving late into the night trying to get to Niagra Falls?
The weather should be nice, but cool. There is always the possibility of snow that time of year, but it rarely accumulates in mid November. So I doubt you will see any. You may catch the leaves changing however, and is a great site up north. It is my favorite time of year, not too hot, not too cold.
It will be safe to stay in Rochester, there are some upper class hotels downtown within the inner loop. For something cheaper, you may want to try around Brockport. I can't think of any hotels that are in trouble neighborhoods, which makes sense. You could also try Syracuse, which may be more of a halfway point. Niagara Falls, USA, is only about 2 hours from Rochester.
You can expect the weather to be around 45°F during the day, and around 30°F at night. The weather won't be a problem for driving; bad storms usually don't arrive until mid to late winter, and even then, the major highways are normally clear within hours. Downtown Rochester has several large, upscale hotels that are very nice, but for convenience to the NYS Thruway and affordability, you may prefer something in the Henrietta area. Have you considered a flight from NYC to Buffalo? This would cut down your drive time significantly, though the scenery on the way from NYC to Niagra Falls at that time of the year is stunning and not to be missed.
Are you planning on using Rochester as a quick stop on your way through or are you actually going to stop and sight see? If you are only using it to crash for the night I agree..... just stay in Henrietta which is just off I 90. There are several places there that are great and it is a safe suburb with a shopping mall and lots of restaurants. I would not stay downtown. It would be more convenient for you to stay in Henrietta.
Yeah. I am just stopping in Rochester to sleep but that's about it. Driving to Canada is a bit of a stretch coming in from a long flight to NYC.
Thanks for everyone's advice and information. I'll consider Syracuse but I'm looking to make it a short drive the next day so I can see Niagra Falls and Toronto without driving fatigue.
