But a grocery store is not the highlight of the city.

What else then? OK let's add Kodak, Golisano and University of Rochester for good measure.

Kodak is a crock. The cameras are poor and they laid off thousands of workers. Next.

Golisano is a wonderful philanthropist and usually a shining example of the good that can come from Rochester, or any place. Too bad he left for Florida to dodge $5,000,000 a year in state income taxes.

U of R is actually a great school. I know many college students who came from all over the world to attend. They all moved here for the college, but I doubt they'd stay long after. It's the lack of jobs in the area, not just the area itself. So I kind of worry for them since many will have a lot of student loans and will have to move elsewhere.

Museums don't count because they're overrated and in almost every state (if not all of them).

Though I'm sure many out-of-state people know of Rochester's Susan B. Anthony Museum which is a pleasant thought.

Though Kodak and Xerox have shrunk, Rochester is still known for its industries, especially if you work as some sort of engineer. I travel to many cities out of state for work at such places as Lockheed Martin, Harris corporation, Raytheon, General Dynamics, Pratt & Whitney, (I could go on). When conversations come up about where I came from, I get a comment about how "snowy it is by the lake". Now if nobody knew where Rochester was, how would they know about the notorious amount of snow we get?

If you were to mention just Rochester to me, my first thought is Rochester, NY unless you tell me otherwise.

they could be good with geography, but they still would have ot have heard of the city in order to make a comment like that.

I think we should have been more famous for J-mac...he was supposed to have a life story movie made about him but it never happened!

Also Chuck Mangione...doesn't he still have a house here?

When I meet these people, especially those who think Rochester is somewhere near NYC by association, I tell them that actually the closest major city is Toronto...it just blows their mind. I cannot really blame them though...until I went to cities like Shreveport, LA, I would never be able to find them on a map, nor know that it was twice as far to New Orleans than Dallas from there.

There are some nice colleges in Rochester, too bad the vast majority of grads have to leave town to find well paid employment. People are far more familiar with Buffalo than Rochester. Harris is the only tech related company that is halfway popping. Unless you want to get involved with the 5linx pyramid scheme?

that's not true at all. There are many small to mid sized companies that have been hiring people in the tech field...I know many take on co-op students from RIT who recently graduated.
