Nice Job! A round of applause for the boys in blue (clapping silently in my cubicle). It's good to see the RPD and the neighborhood groups working so well together, and even better to see the results. In effect, the neighborhood programs of this fine city, among other things, saved 30 lives last year. A pat on the back to all responsible.
This is pat of a national trend. I'm glad to see it. I don't know if it's the RPD or if people are just being less violent in general, but it's still good.

Might a little bit of both and the fact that most people a hurting a bit economically too.
That's what's most surprising to me about the drop in crime...the fact that it did happen in such rough economic times; on a national and local level this seems to defy logic IMO. You'd think more people would steal/commit crimes when there is less work. Definitely a good sign that this drop in crime rate; here and across the country; even in an economy like the one we've had for the past few years.
Hmmm, where are the actual stats? According to friends, there, shootings were way up last year. That and 2 cops were shot, but luckily survived.
Agreed. Stats like this are typically arranged by changing definitions of crimes and categorizations and mislead people into believing crime rates actually dropped.

I think people have to differentiate between shootings and homicides. You might have more gun play, but that doesn't mean that everyone shot died.
What's also interesting is that the Northeast has the lowest crime rate of any region in terms of violent and property crime, according to the latest complete information: Regional Estimates - Crime in the United States 2008 (http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2008/offenses/standard_links/regional_estimates.html - broken link)
