Is Monroe like a hooker street or something? (Rochester: live, restaurants)

I just moved to Rochester a couple of weeks ago. I live off Monroe near the Inner Loop. The first time I rode to bus, a couple days after I arrived here, I was waiting at the bus stop and a guy kept driving by, honking, and then pulling off a few feet up from me and waving. Then this morning around 6 am I was on the way to the bus and this guy followed me .1 of a mile telling me he was bored.
I thought maybe these guys thought I was a prostitute. I don't see why, though, since I dress very modestly and don't wear make up. I thought maybe it was the street. Is this where hookers hang out?
Not that I'm aware of - that's kind of odd. Was he younger, older, did he seem "dirty"? Maybe he was just being friendly (toungue firmly planted in cheek). Though Monroe isn't usually considered a "hooker street" I wouldn't be surprised by a drunk (or coked up) perv still out @ 6 a.m. from the night before.
Lyell Ave is hooker street. So avoid soliciting (or just being) on their corner.
Monroe Ave is not a place I would walk or wait for a bus, but I think you just got unlucky. Try making yourself look unappealing to unwanted onlookers, especially in the city.
well thousands of people manage to cram into the bars and restaurants on monroe on a weekly basis with no incident so I'd say it's pretty safe. The people who don't think it's safe are the know nothing suburbanites who never go to the city anyways.
Unfortunately, if you're a young woman in a city like Rochester men will sometimes try to chat you up on the street, often from their car. It's not because you're dressing provocatively or projecting any "friendliness": these kind of men will talk to pretty much any woman they see walking alone. Doesn't matter what time of day, and they're generally more bold if you're in an area with few people (Monroe Ave at 6am) and when you're by yourself. If the attention is unwanted, just keep walking and respond as little as possible.

If that's some kind of crack at me, you are very ill-informed.
There's very little justification for wanting to take a bus or walk through the city. This is Rochester. Get a car.
But I'm sure you'll tell everyone it's safe as long as you go to work there every day and avoid getting harassed. If that happens, don't be afraid to let us know.
