Have you ever had a garbage plate outside of Rochester? They seem to be such a big food here but ive never seen a restaurant that serves out outside of this region.
And why do different businesses change the name to things like sloppy plate or trash plate?
I've had one in Buffalo at some diner in South Buffalo. It was one of the worst things I have ever eaten. They used tuna in the mac salad.
I had one in Philly at a place called the Ugly American. It was halfway decent.
You have the name change most likely because of trademark issues.
There's a joint called university hits in Buffalo on Elmwood that has decent plates- started by a couple of guys from Rochester who went to UB. Or maybe B'lo guys who went to U of R. I can never get that straight. The plate run to Tahous is one of my favorite memories of my college years, and one of the few that survived the memory robbing debauchery I had been engaging in during those years lol.

The one on Elmwood is gone. That closed down a couple years ago, it's a cell phone store now or something. I went there once, it was OK. But it wasn't a true plate.

Do you know if they moved or just closed? I haven't been down there in a minute (obviously).
Place in Richmond, VA, sells 'em, in fact I think they were the ones the Tahou family sued, resulting in the trademark they use.
I've heard a place or two in Charlotte sell them, and maybe one in Atlanta.
The concept of a meaty hot sauce is a bit foreign to a lot of folks, but it seems to be popular in Rochester, Buffalo, and a few other Midwestern cities. I prefer the knock offs out in the 'burbs to the original.
The YouTube vids about Tahou's are kinda cool. I wasn't aware 'til I'd watched one that the "Garbage Plate" name came about in the 70's, as RIT and other schools grew (they used to be downtown) and kids were asking for "the plate with all the garbage on it". Blue collar food, for sure, and it came about during the Depression.
That's odd, they always taste good to me as long as the food itself is good. Hell I don't even need to be starving for it to taste good. Anyone that thinks they only taste good when hungover needs to have their taste buds examined, or become a vegetarian.
As far as the looks, personally I think they look delicious. What's better than a heaping of food mixed together that taste ohhh so good together?!
They are unheard of outside of Rochester because they are poorly named, look revolting, and only taste good if you have a hangover.
Yeah right. I took all my college buddies from out of town to have one. They had never had one, and agreed it looked questionable at best. However, once they ate one, they were hooked. I have friends who will come up from downstate just to get a plate.

If by downstate you mean New York then I have trouble believing that.
