They sell nuts/bolts/screws by the pound using a analog scale and trust the number you give them at the register.
They sell merchandise thats so old, it has no bar codes.
They still stock hand presses/drills.
Still has in stock metal gas tanks.
Sells baby chicks.

Add your own only if your current general store does or sells something that the chain stores don't.

Ours let my kid's doctor re-cast her arm using their large sink because the trip to either of his offices was so far for us and he was passing by from one hospital that he covers to another.

They let small clubs meet there. It's where we can go for news on wildfires or closed backroads because it's where those workers go for everything from welding rod to coffee to sandwiches to sunscreen.

We have a couple and most of the employees know us when we walk in they deliver our salt for the water softener, carry it down to the basement, fill the softner and put the key back where it belongs if the door is locked and they make sure to let the dog out while they are delivering the salt and put him back inside before they leave.

They sell just about everything that you actually will need and have that wonderful smell of old wooden floors. They also let the regulars run a tab.
