They definitely exist, I grew up in one and I know it hasn't changed all that much. I think they got rid of most of the brick roads though.

Default Small towns do exist

I live in Wisconsin, my husband and I are retired, my brother and his wife are also retired. We have this game we play of finding a new place to eat out of town. We take turns picking a place. We give each other a few clues to see if any one knows the place or has eaten there before. We have found quite a few towns playing this game. Also while ridding the Amtrak we have passed by some beautiful small places. We find people in all the places friendly. BUT NO COBBLE STONE STREETS.

There were some areas of downtown St Louis that had cobblestone streets not too many years ago - but that's neither small nor friendly. Having said that, there are some in OK, and some with roads so rough they'd have been better if the cobblestones and gravel had been left as it was. Small and friendly, yes, for the most part.
