We live in a small town in Kent County, Delaware, with a population of approximately 1,150 wonderful people, and we are Delaware natives. We border the City of Dover, and even with work-time traffic on our main street, we have retained our small town atmosphere and friendliness. We have a bank, a little mom-pop deli/grocery store, post office, and funeral home. We plan our own festivals and parades, decorate our town hall for Halloween and Christmas, and have events at our Park, along the pond, for children. We decorate our porches for all holidays, and Homecoming for the local high school is a big deal, with a small town parade. On summer nights, we locals invite those out for their evening walk up on our porches for homemade lemonade or iced tea. Everybody's invited. We have 3 police cars, and it's nice to see one sitting in front of my house, or down the street every morning. They don't have much to do.
We ladies ride bikes up and down the street together when the sun comes up, wear straw hats with ribbons flying, and bike to the farm orchard outside of town for local produce. We have a town newspaper consisting of 2 pages, 8'' x 10'', and we find it every month stuck in our storm door. January 1st we have a breakfast to kick off the new year, and we make a party out of our monthly council meetings. The agenda usually consists of
1) police report (20 seconds)
2) street maintenance (1 minute)
3) treasurer's report (30 seconds)
4) sewer & water report (20 seconds)
5) coming events, i.e. festivals, parades, parties (1 hour) and
6) refreshments (1 hour). I guess you'd call us "back woods", and we are, to a certain extent, but we like it that way
While the rest of Kent County and Delaware are experiencing growing pains, our little town is holding it's own. We just continue sipping our lemonade, watch the world go by, and wait for our next town meeting to be with our friends.
