Its seems they start out nice and quickly go downhill. I guess they don't attract top of the line employees. The one closest to me is dark because half the lights don't work, there is always boxes and ladders in front of isles where you cant get to things and shelves are not well stocked. Every time I went in the one in town the employees were out front smoking. They are convenient though when you need to grab something quick and don't want to drive 20 miles.

According to the Wikipedia article on Dollar General, the reason many dollar stores (using the generic description) may be located in the middle of nowhere could be due to zoning restrictions in cities and boroughs:
The rapid growth in dollar stores across the USA have created food deserts and a “dollar store belt”. Originally opened with local tax incentives, a number of municipalities have been adding zoning bylaws to discourage dollar stores.

2018 article from Bloomberg on zoning as a means to keep out dollar stores:

It (dollar stores)advertises hard-to-beat low prices but it offers little in terms of fresh produce and nutritious items—further trapping residents in a cycle of poverty and ill-health.
I dont agree with this. At least in my rural area these stores dont replace grocery stores that provide fresh fruits and veggies. People travel to the more populated towns to grocery shop. The DG is a convenience when you ran out of milk or bread, beer, or want a frozen pizza or soda and want to pick that up quick. There are also Dollar General Markets that sell produce and meat but those are generally closer to or in town.

Is there a dollar general near you, have you ever shopped there, why. What do you buy?

No, I live in a very expensive part of South Florida and commercial retail space is anywhere from $50-$125 per square foot.

Of course I've shopped at Dollar General. It's a great place to get inexpensive decorations for holidays like St. Patricks and 4th of July.

Good that you don't. The article is politically driven (I wouldn't be surprised to find one of Dollar General's competitors wrote it) and socialist in nature. Your assessment is spot on.

The Dollar Generals are everywhere in my area. I'm surrounding by them. There is one newer store that is very nice, but most are way too cramped for the amount of goods they try to carry. The worst one is so bad you can barely walk through the isles. Not my favorite place to go, but they do carry many basics so I'm not against shopping there.
