Tie the invader up, roll him in a corner, and call the cops.

Robert please don’t brandish a firearm like others have advised.
It’s just a bad idea.

I was taught to not put my finger on the trigger or "hold" the trigger unless I'm ready to fire.

Just deleted some threads advocating shooting the intruder. Not allowed per C-D rules. Displaying a weapon to hold or frighten the intruder, OK.

Trespassing is not a capital crime last time I checked.

You do understand that trespassing is very different from rape or murder, don't you? Or are you advocating some sort of preemptive strike against a trespasser because he might just become a rapist or murderer?

Say it with me.

"imminent peril of death or great bodily injury to self, family, or a member of the household" (or something similar in your state)

If you can prove that in court, you're set. Its very simple.
