I have really enjoyed this intelligent and perceptive thread. Thanks to all who posted here. I had the good sense to stay in the city after I retired and I have never regretted it. Too bad some of the city folks who became such a pain in the behind to you genuine country folk didn't have the common sense to realize things would be really different.

I realize that moving to the country would be a huge change, but I still think I'd like it if I lived where I wanted to and if I had a good house to live in. I'll probably just move to a much smaller town. I'm tired of the big city scene (DFW has over 6.3 million population, and it's still growing rapidly). Many of the things I like (motorcycling, ham radio, and amateur astronomy) work out so much better away from the cities.

I'm currently doing both. I'd say if you're starting to make a major change, don't burn any bridges. We're lucky enough to be able to rent (reasonably cheaply) in inner city Sydney, and a in a village in the middle of ....nowhere. *looks around nervously*. It's quiet here....too quiet.

I can see the advantages and otherwise of both. Where we are, inner city types are airheads who talk too much about nothing, and country folk seem to spend all of their time outside the only pub. But as long as I have to live in Australia, it's actually an ideal situation for me. I get tired of one, go back to the other. Yes, I do have a job, otherwise I'd spend more time in the country right now. I don't interact a lot with folks out here though, so it probably saves my sanity somewhat. I deal with people all day in my job, and being out here is a good tonic for that.
