I WOULD LIKE TO FIND A SMALL TOWN (LESS THAN 1000 PEOPLE)ANYWHERE THAT HAS A GREAT FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION. WITH A PARADE, PICNIC WHERE EVERYONE IN TOWN GOES AND FIREWORKS ON A LAKE OR RIVER. DOES THAT EVEN EXIST ANYMORE OR ONLY IN MOVIES LIKE HOPE FLOATS? LOL. I ONLY FIND "SMALL TOWNS" THAT HAVE 20,000 VISITORS COME.YUCK. WE LIVE IN SAN DIEGO CA AND IM TIRED OF CITY CELEBRATIONS.PEOPLE CAN BE SO ANTI AMERICAN ON AMERICAS BIRTHDAY.I WANT A LITTLE PIECE OF AMERICANA. They mention Independence, California. Looking it up they have just 574 people. The second smallest they name is Gatlinburg, Tennessee but it has over 3,000 people so might be too big for you.
Bigger still is Seward, Nebraska. It is known for its Fourth of July celebration, but at 6,319 people it's way bigger than your specifications. Still I wouldn't think of that as that big. It looks to be a pretty safe town.
Pentwater, MI. Great fireworks display over Lake Michigan. Although, it is the best set of fireworks in the area, so there are a lot of people show up for them. Ludington is larger, but has a stereotypical "small town" parade on the 4th and is just up the road a little bit from Pentwater. They have their fireworks usually right on the 4th, while Pentwater has theirs on the 3rd, so you get to go to a couple of different sets on a typical 4th week-end. The Ludington parade is a long one, but it is hard to fit that many tractors, old cars, and semis into a short one .
This area is very "flag waving," stand up and give the vets that are in the parades a standing ovation and everybody still stands and removes their hats whenever the flag goes by at the beginning of every parade.
Wrangell, Alaska's where you want to be on the 4th. We're a small island town of about 1000 - but during the week of the 4th our population quadruples. Anyone who's ever lived here, visited here, has family or friends here comes home for the 4th. Better Homes & Gardens magazine even did a 4-page spread touting Wrangell, Alaska as having the best home-town 4th of July celebration. Sorry, fireworks photos are still in the camera. There's the parade, of course, then the games begin starting with the toddlers on up to the old folks. 3-legged race, egg toss (We were in the Guiness Book of World Records year before last for having the biggest egg tossing contest!), homemade boat races for the kids, loggging contests, a "scrapfish" derby for the kids with prizes ranging from a new bike to $5,000 for the winning ticket drawn - all followed by a guitar party while waiting for dusk and the fireworks to begin. Anyone who wants to set up a food booth does, there's burgers, hotdogs, crab, halibut, shrimp, smoked salmon - the menu seems endless and so does the fun. In fact, I'm still recouperating!
