I grew up on a farm outside a village of 350 people. Not 350,000. Just 350. I spent much of my twenties in a city of two million with a metro area of nine million. I found plenty to do and was happy both places. Just as I'm happy now, in a midsize city of significantly more than 50,000.
I would imagine that a very large pecentage of rural people would be in awe and amazement that it is even Humanly possible for a town to have 50,000 people. Since they are not even used to living in towns with more than 50 people let alone 50,000 people.
Just how ignorant do you think people who live in small towns are? In awe and amazement that a city can have 50,000? Do you lie awake nights dreaming up these dumb-ass questions, and then spend the day patting yourself on the back congratulating yourself that you are "educating" the poor rural hicks about city life? I choose to live in a town of 1200 people; after living in Detroit, MI; and Dallas, TX; and spending considerable time in NYC, LA, Chicago, Atlanta, etc.... Just like my Dr. who not only comes from a big city, but taught medical school there as well; until she got tired of the rat race and moved to the town she used to vacation in.
There is not much to do in a town of only 50,000 people. Now a city of 500,000 people is a whole another story.
Thanks for this post. I gave you the benefit of the doubt before but with this you have made it absolutely clear what your trolling intentions are. Thankfully City Data Forum has a pretty big forum with many sub-forums that your pro-urban post would fit into quite nicely. Perhaps that would be a better place to put your poll since you are not getting much responses here?
My wife has a college friend that comes up every year to our cookout and while he is a nice guy, he brags up the virtues of Boston life all the time and in some ways, knocks life on the farm here.
That is fine, but ultimately I get the last laugh. I built my house at 18 years old from wood harvested off the farm and cut on the families sawmill...he is 35 years old and living in a bedroom in his mother's house.
I am on a couple of forums Marmac and I often have to wonder if my wife's friend cannot get enough money to rent a city apartment, how many of these other pro-city posters are in the same boat? I mean you never see pictures or anything about what they are DOING?
In my very biased opinion, cities are rated by violent crime statistics rather than the number of people residing within set boundaries. I have no idea how many people reside in the city I call home, nor do I care to know. What matters is that the streets are safe to walk even by elderly or disabled persons. I know that if I break down on the road, the very next motorist to come by will stop and offer me assistance. I have had elderly ladies with permanent handicap sticker on their license tags stop and offer to let me sit in their car to stay warm until other help arrives. That is how I measure a city.
Why would you never want to live in a town with 50,000 people ? In your opinion what are the cons of living in a town of that size ? Is life in a town of 50,000 too fast paced for you ?
Oh, I grew up in Phoenix, AZ, so I know big cities, but I left it and have no desire to go back! As far as the town I mentioned of 50,000, I lived in that town years ago and I just like living in a small town better. I am happy with less crowds and less traffic!!
