Is it legal to remove your mailbox, and therefore not accept mail? I was told by the post office that:
1. You must keep a mailbox, but you can personally refuse mail by marking the mail "refused" and putting it back in the mailbox. However, I find this to be too tedious.
2. You can remove your mailbox completely and you must sign a contrary order (which I think will put us on a government watchlist, and I don't really want to sign anything). Isn't it my right to refuse mail?
Hardest part is people think we are crazy for not wanting mail- we are not anti-government zealots, we just feel that in this day and age, we don't need mail and it is mostly advertisments, bills, and other junk that only causes stress. We have also given up our cell phones, cable, and email. We are finding life to be a lot less hectic without these "modern conveniences"
Has anyone here removed their mailbox? Do people think you are nuts?
Not accepting mail can put you at risk when it comes to mailed legal documents.
I'd be worried about jury summons and whatnot though... We had a guy at my old place ignore a jury summons and a sheriff came and served him at work. It wasn't pretty.
I don't know what states those would be since FEMA has pretty much mandated it.
Oh really? Don't need any registered address of any sort in Alaska. Several other states are the same way. Not every state caves into every demand from the almighty big brother. The conspiracy theorist in me tells me I wouldn't want FEMA to have my address. Ever hear of REX 84?

Not your address, it's a physical address. Post Office is somewhat driving it, too. I have the feeling, and I don't have the ambition to check, that the urban areas in Alaska have some form of it. Out in the bush, well, no. This physical address requirement started years ago when the RFD routes started to be phased out.

Actually, much of the reason that I am removing the mailbox (it is now removed) is to avoid letters for Jury Duty, Court Orders, IRS, lawyers, etc. It will be sent back to the sending party marked "Refused". I figure if they want to find me, they will need to hand deliver a certified letter that must be signed by me, not by anyone else.

I know you're referring to physical address. I know what you're talking about. What I'm saying is you don't have to have one everywhere...and I'd prefer being without one.

I don't know the law in this particular area. But in Law School there was the concept of "constructive notice", which I seem to recall really just means they have to make a "valid attempt". In that case, running the legalese in the newspaper sufficed (if I recall correctly).

Well, I gave in, and the mailbox is back with the door removed. Apparently, although it is not illegal, it is frowned upon by nosy neighbors who are making me an unwanted celebrity and a local nutcase.
