Our little town has a car dealership that will take trade-ins of snowmobiles, atv's, tractors, and now they will take horses. That is a new one for this area.
Last year (or maybe the year before... can't exactly remember) the price of hay went WAY up. Price of horses went way down. Couldn't give them away. Could be a problem if enough people actually took them up on it.

There is an RV dealer in Bakersfield that claims they will take ANYTHING in on trade. I don't know how that has worked for them, or for their customers, but it could get interesting. In the case of horses, I can't imagine these places offering very much for them, unless they already had a buyer lined up to take them off their hands.
Yeah that is about the way it is here. You feed sheep and cows one morning, then the next you wake up having two horses in your pasture to feed as well. The darn fools that bought these things thought boom times would never end, now they got laid off and are getting rid of their horses left and right. I don't care if they get rid of them, but don't drop them off in my pasture!!
Maybe instead of putting them into the compost heap, I should get a flock of them and head to that car dealer and trade them in for a new farm truck...or make money on them and start up a glue or dog food factory! (LOL)
Incidentally when I was over in Ireland, they had the exact same problem with horses. In fact the farm I was staying on took in two rescue horses free for the taking. I guess the horse problem and unemployment is a global issue huh?
