Sac Light Rail (Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, Folsom: leasing, buy, university)

Is the Light Rail system easy to figure out? Do alot of people go on LR? I/ll be taking it downtown from Sac STate for work in the AM.

Very easy. There are maps and schedules posted at each stop. You can purchase of booklet from RT of all the LR and bus schedules. You can also call them, tell them where you are and where you want to go as well as what time you need to be there and they'll give you all the info you need.

It works quite well for commuting. Recent budget cuts have stopped all trains and buses after 9 PM, which is a shame, and cut a lot of routes completely, but service in the central city during working hours is still pretty good. Going from Sac State downtown there is only one line, although going downtown back towards Sac State make sure you are getting on the Gold Line (Sunrise or Folsom bound) train rather than the Blue Line (Meadowview/South Sacramento) train.

From downtown take the light rail that goes to sunrise or folsom. Get off at university/65th.

Make sure you have your bus ticket / pass. They now cost $2.50 for one way, $6.00 for a whole day. And they can be purchased from the machines at the LR Stations.

RT's light rail will do this periodic "off-and-on" check for tickets and passes. If you don't have them, they will take you off the train and fine you a whole lot of money you don't have. ;_;

I didn't. But I sat near those who had been busted. RT's THAT serious.

I was on a train they "raided." Not just RT PD but also Sac Sheriff and Rancho Cordova PD. Saw more busts last week. I'm glad they're catching some of the icky people...

For the original poster, if you will be commuting daily, you can buy an RT pass for the month for $100 at the 13th street RT station office. Check though, with your agency (if you work for the state) or your building leasing office. I can get mine for $85. With the pass, you don't have to run for the ticket validator machine when your train is coming

You can also buy a pack of tickets (10 tickets for $25) at the same office, if you prefer. Those do have to be validated for each ride, and make sure that you do it, or you'll get busted if you don't.

Oh...and as someone else said, make sure you get on the Sunrise or Folsom trains in the pm when you are going back...NOT Meadowview. If you ever have to ride late (after regular commuting hours) I recommend riding in the first rail car where the driver is...near the driver. It can get *interesting* in the evening (midday too! Lots of transients, loud, and rude people on board).

I'm wondering how the 9PM cutoff for the light rail is going to work with the South Line. A lot of classes at Sacramento City College end from 9:00 to 9:50 PM, and all students are forced to pay a fee of $5.00 to RT.
