I just got a job working on the corner of 10th & I. Is there ANY free parking around there? Or is it all metered? I'll be coming from Sac State. Should I just take the RT?

Bus 31 goes straight from 10th + J to Sac State via J Street, it returns via L. No, there is no free parking. But if yiu're a Sac State student you get a free transit pass for RT. If you're not a student but are a state employee, a lot of agencies have a discount program. Parking lots downtown generally charge about $100-150 a month.

There is free parking, but you have to scout it out and be willing to walk or bike a mile or so. I know there is free parking at like 28th and G, and then some down around 14th and V. If you can, before you start working there, print out a map of the city grid, and go drive around. Use a highlighter on your map and notate the free parking. To get the free parking, though, you may have to get there around 6:30 am.

Good idea from wburg about the free transit for students...that goes for students at the local community colleges, too.

You could also park near the 23rd St light rail station and take light rail in.

"Free" is a relative term. Walking from 28th and G to 10th and H takes about 20-30 minutes, so that's an hour each day. This means you spend an extra hour per day "commuting"--how much is an hour of your time worth? If it is worth more than $5-6, then it's "cheaper" to rent a monthly parking space for around $100-120 near 10th and I than walk 20-30 hours a month for a "free" parking space.

Of course, it is a pleasant walk through pretty neighborhoods and beautiful trees, and you wouldn't need a gym membership anymore. But if you live near Sac State, it would take about the same amount of time to bike from East Sac to downtown.

Another thing to consider is that the central city is woefully underparked--many houses and apartments don't have parking spaces or garages, so people park on the street. Any "free" parking you occupy is where someone who lives in the neighborhood parks their car. Some central city residents take that personally. Also, there is daytime homeless traffic through most central city neighborhoods--don't leave anything of value in your car, including pocket change, empty aluminum cans, cigarette packs... Ask KC6ZLV about problems he has had with auto break-ins.

There is very little unregulated parking near the 23rd Street light rail station.
