New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine ... It's a bit of a drive so bring a sandwich.

(Sorry ... but you're not going to get a real fall experience out west here ... enjoy the mini-colors you can find in the mountains here and there)

The Drive up the 50 to Placerville will have fall colors - that's why we go to Apple Hill once or twice a year

Plumas county is amazing during the fall. The little towns of Chester and Quincy are great spots to visit. There is a fall foilage map here: http://plumascounty.org/PDF/Mapandroutes.pdf

Okay, KC6ZLV reminds me that I exaggerate. The best place for fall color is Sacramento proper, especially the old neighborhoods--our abundance of urban trees makes for a nice fall show, especially if you can get a few stories up. But the experience isn't quite what it is in, say, the Midwest, where it seems like half of Illinois drives up to Wisconsin to look at trees (and buy cheese.)

The difference between here and the Northeast is the native trees. Most of the fall color you will see in urban areas are from ornamental landscaping. Pin Oaks, Ginko, Liquid Amber (the one that drops golf balls all over the yard), Pistacios, etc. Few native trees are colorful in the fall. Aspen/cottonwoods, Sycamore, which seems to turn brown in one area, but yellow in others. The yellow trees in the Downtown photo are sycamores. Black Oak in the upper foothills, dogwoods, poison oak, and several others are colorful in the fall. Usually you will see more contrast with evergreens than you will a colorful landscape. Hwy 70 is a good drive in the fall. The location called the Keddie Wye along Hwy 70 is one of my favorite places. It isn't that it is colorful, but the color that is there contrasts with Douglas Fir and Ponderosa Pine. It is a good place to train watch, if you have the time. Bring a camera with a zoom lens.
