My wife and I are looking at houses in Fair Oaks. We have found several that we like near the intersection of Fair Oaks and San Juan. We moved from San Francisco a few months ago and don't know much about the area. We're trying to calibrate our judgement. We haven't really figured out where is good and where is not so good. We think that we really like the area where we have found a couple of possibilities (east of San Juan between Fair Oaks and Sunset) but we could really use some input about the area in general. We are not as concerned about schools right now as our daughter is enrolled in the california montessori project and we're quite happy with that.
Thanks for your help.

That area is fine. Fair Oaks in general is one of the nice older establised suburban areas in Sacramento County and has always had a good reputation. In fact parts of Fair Oaks have a semi-rural feel to it including it's own population of wild chickens that roam around Old Fair Oaks Village. If you're main concern is things like rampant crime ,gangs, shootings,etc...you're not going to have any real issues. Crime around there is generally low to average at worst. I live in Fair Oaks not too far away and like it a lot. Never had any issues or problems. Also, it's only about 15 to 20 minutes to downtown/midtown via Hwy 50 (excluding rush hour of course). Good luck.

Misc,
Thanks a lot. That's the kind of info I was looking for. We've been to downtown fair oaks and really liked it. In general we like the Fair Oaks "Feel". We were considering Folsom and El Dorado Hills as well. Folsom was the frontrunner and it's only recently that Fair Oaks rose in our rankings. Originally we were thinking somewhere on the east side but we like a couple of houses over near San Juan. Good to hear that the crime isn't rampant.
Thanks again for the feedback.

We like that part of Fair Oaks as well ( we are in East Fair Oaks, closer to American River Canyon)
Not there because of the schools.

But if you like the Streung architecture and do not care about schools, I'd say lok at South Land Park - Fab stuff over there!

Thanks for the feedback. We really loved east Fair oaks/orangevale/Folsom corridor along the american river but my wife fell in love with a couple of houses on the other side of fair oaks and, since our rental condo is being foreclosed on, we have a a pretty short timeline.
I really appreciate your stamp of approval since it appears you are the guru of the greater Sacramento area. I must say that we've been very pleasantly surprised by how much we are liking the area. Our decision to move from SF is looking better every day.

A guru? More like just a bit outspoken. But Thank you.

I have friends who moved here from SF to raise their kids, and they said they'd never move back

We live in east Fair Oaks and love the area. I grew up in the Sacramento area, and Fair Oaks is definitely a nice central location. I have heard great things about CA montessori project as well. The Costco & Walmart on Old Auburn near San Juan is nice and convenient. And you have to check out Leatherby's for their homemade ice cream & sundaes! If your daughter is interested in gymnastics, dance or cheer, you should check out Fliptastic at Marconi & Fair Oaks Blvd. I also recommend Bayside Church if you are looking.

Thanks for the information. It looks like we will be buying a house in that area. Offer accepted, loan approved, just waiting on some paperwork to come in.
We'll definitely check out Leatherbys. Don't know about fliptastic, as my daughter is pretty happy over at Technique in Rancho.

Thanks again
