Been around since the 30s, originally across the street from the Memorial Auditorium, then moved to 12th between H and I when the bus station (now a printer's shop) moved there from the vicinity of 16th and J.

If you drop by Jim Dennys be prepared to shell out 13-14.00$ for a burger and fries. FYI.

That would include a drink! Well worth it, occasionally, just for the historical experience. It ain't McDonald's. It's real meat for real people! Beef! It's what's for dinner, except for ya wussy vegetarians!

Here's the menu:

http://jim-dennys.com/_media/menu.pdf

Most expensive burger is $9.75, for a pound of hamburger in a bun. Fries are another $2.25. The standard burger (the "five cent burger") is $5.50. So if you got the megaburger and fries, with cheese, that would be $13. It's not a place to get a really cheap burger to fill your stomach (for that, I'd recommend the Capitol Park Cafe, or if you're really desperate, the Traveler's Restaurant in the Greyhound station), it is a funky little place to get a really good burger for a bit less than a sit-down restaurant price.

New Hong Kong Wok on Freeport, has really good Cantonese style bbq dishes, and noodle/congee/rice plates.

Shoki Ramen house. Excellent Ramen.

Slightly off-topic, for the money I'd go to Fuddrucker's on Sunrise. Fresh ground beef or steak, or even ostrich-burgers. I like the new chain Smashburgers too with apple-smoked bacon. Jim Denny's is fun once in a while if you have business to do in Downtown.

What about Squeeze Burger or did the policically correct finally get them shut down for lack of enough handicapped access?

The wheelchair-chaser attorney was dissuaded but they relocated to a larger location that no longer seats quite so few, and have expanded into additional locations (they are apparently eyeing the former home of Cornerstone at 23rd and J in Midtown.) So while the burgers are the same, it's not quite the same divey place anymore.

What a shame! And what happened to the Cornerstone. I know they opened another eatery shortly before we left - more up-scale - but that place boomed, especially on the weekend. Then again, people just sat there zoning for hours, drinking coffee and taking up space so it was sometimes hard to find seating.

Apparently the landlord wanted Cornerstone out. They relocated to 20th and K, across from Faces and the MARRS building, and have plans to move into an old church on 23rd and K. Their "Stonegrill" place on 21st and L already went out of business, that site has had a sushi restaurant and sports bar since then.

Apparently the attention and support gathered by the Squeeze due to the ADA attorney gave them so much more business they got sick of people "squeezing in" and the move was a way to serve that many more customers. Change isn't always for the bad.
