I have read some posts on here about Stockton and Modesto having high crime rate and car theft. These posts were more than a year old; so I am hoping to get some updated info about these two cities. I am looking to move to either one of these cities. I am not concerned about school district as I dont have any children and I already have a job lined up.

1. Which would you choose? Which city has more urban feel?

2. I'm looking for a NICE (newer) apt complexes or a condo to rent in a SAFE neighborhood where I can jog or walk my dog. Please advise...your input is greatly appreciated!

Modesto.

Both cities are very much suburban.

Yeah, you're not going to find a lot of "urban feel" in either place. Downtown Stockton has some neat old brick buildings and some industrial grit via the Port of Stockton, but if you're looking for skyscrapers or high-end urban amenities you're probably not going to find too much. They are basically Valley agricultural cities that became de facto suburbs of the South Bay during the real estate bubble.

Both have plenty of safe, boring neighborhoods. It does beg the question why. The only reason I can see moving to either Stockton or Modesto is for a job or school. Modesto has a nice little downtown miniurban area. It used to be better, last time I was there (years ago) it was pretty vacant. Stockton has more of an actual down town but its still slim pickings.

Thank you for all of your inputs. I believe that someone on this forum had mentioned that North or Northeast part of Modesto is safe (or safer) and has newer houses. Does it have any nice, safe and newer apt complexes in the North or Northeast?

I've got a job offer located in both of these cities. I dont mind if it's a boring neighborhood but safety is the utmost important criteria as I will be getting off work late at night.
