In a word, HOT. My brother lives there and it's always over 100 when we go visit. Probably should try it in winter. From what I hear the schools are not great but not bad, at about the high end of average. Cost of living is less than the CA big cities but still high. It's beautiful if you like dry grass. Nearby Whiskeytown Lake, Lake Shasta and Mt. Shasta are beautiful but think of it as a flat desert surrounded by mountains.

Hmm. Cause I'm from the Los Angeles area and can't wait to leave it. As a young single mom with 2 little kids, one with special needs, I'm desperate to find a slower paced, safer, affordable area for my family.

Redding has the hot summers that Sacramento gets, but they aren't as long. It's right up around 100 for three to four months of the year. The other eight is pretty nice. If you like the sun it's a great place. It also gets a good amount of rain (40 inches). In the summer it's hot and dry, in the spring and fall its mostly sun with mild temperatures and quite a bit of rain. There's not much of a winter season, just pretty much summer and spring/fall. It definitely has its natural beauty, but the four months of heat and little to no rain means there's not a lot of diversity in vegetation. Not much besides oaks trees and a few scrubby bushes can survive through the summer.

Other than that... Redding really has two sides to it. It's got that slower paced, community oriented aspect to it. But, it also has the darker side. Poverty, meth, and the multi-generational perpetual welfare culture is the other half or Redding.

I'd suggest Castro Valley, one of the more affordable bay area towns with good schools, many more trees and a milder climate.
