We live in Rocklin, but are wondering where the best places to buy meat are in the greater Sac area (we dont mind having to drive every now and then).

Safeway has a terrible meat department. Whole Foods is expensive (captain obvious statement of the day). Raleys/Bel Air are okay, but we were wondering if there's any locally owned businesses to check out.

We tried Roseville Meat Company, but weren't blown away. Everything was frozen, which is fine (especially if i'm buying bulk since i'll freeze it anyways), but I would think they would have had some fresh cuts. That, and from what I remember, they had lots of specialty stuff, but not just basic cuts of meat. I may be mistaken, and would give them another try if necessary.

I had tried Nugget once but cant remember how it was, and we're headed to Costco in a few.
Haven't heard of Corti Bros before, I'll have to check that out.

Corti is pretty good, located at Folsom Blvd and 59th St.

Try Sampino's Towne Foods (Italian deli) at the corner of 16th and F (funky little strip mall). John was the head butcher for Corti Bros. for many years and has beautiful meats. He'll also order and cut to order. Fabulous sandwiches as well. The Sampanini and the meatball are hard to beat. The rest are great too.

I agree that the local supermarkets leave a lot to be desired in their meat departments. However, I love WF, Nugget & TJs & thankfully live near all 3.

Try these:

Taylor's Market, 2900 Freeport Boulevard, Sac

Taylor's Market | Gourmet Grocery Store for Specialty and Organic Foods, Beverages and Wines

Orangevale Meat Shop

While the food quality at both Taylors and Corti Brothers is excellent, it tends to be pricey like Whole Foods.

Have you looked at the Sprouts or the Nugget in Roseville? First they are a lot closer to where you live. Second, in my experience they tend to be priced much more competitively.

The other place that I have some success for frozen meats but is more hit or miss is Grocery Outlet. I have found deals on Buffalo meat and on Aidells Sausage. But there inventory can vary a lot depending on what stuff the buyer find on any given week.

I'll have to echo the Corti Bros recommendations. Yes, they are priced a little higher than Nugget and Grocery Outlet, but the staff really know their stuff and the quality is pretty great. I hope you find what you are looking for.

also try the asian markets, they usually have a pretty good variety of meats including fish and the prices are more reasonable

Seafood city , 99 Ranch, Vinh Phat, and others
