I'll be moving to Sacramento soon and working downtown. Looking for a safe urban neighborhood reasonably close to work where I can walk my dog, walk to bars, resteraunts, etc.

Look at Midtown, East Sacramento, Curtis Park or Land Park.

A bit further out but still close enough is South Land Park or Pocket.

What kind of place do you want to live? Downtown and Midtown both have lofts and upscale apartments, Midtown will have more converted old Victorians as duplexes, triplexes etc, as well as some Brownstones both new and old; the surrounding areas of Land Park, Curtis Park, and East Sac have a better selection of duplexes and single family houses (but do still have some apartments. Downtown and Midtown will have the most going on and certainly a more urban feel, while the surrounding areas still have quite a bit in walking distance and access to Midtown and downtown via long walk or easy bike ride.

All of those areas are pretty safe. I will admit that some places in downtown *feel* a bit less because there's less store traffic and more indigent traffic, but statistically still pretty safe.

Hi SG,

I think Midtown and East Sac would be your best bets. Mid-town is very mixed, in terms of age groups, races, housing types, has lots of restaurants and bars, very walkable, easy access to freeways. Does tend to have a higher crime rate, particularly property crimes. East Sac has a bit of a slower pace, IMO, and has more single-family homes vs. Mid-town, which adds in lots of apartment buildings. Both areas have great parks. Speaking of parks, the north side of Land Park is very nice.

Me too! And, yes, I did live in Sacratomato for almost 20 years and relatively recently. Not a bad place to be unless you end up in a bad place.
