Hi-
I am an application developer currently stuck on the rainy cold east coast. I am looking into moving to Sacramento or close by. I enjoy spending time outdoors (biking, tennis, rollerblading..). I hear the temps top the 90's in summer but the humidity is low. Do people still get out and enjoy outdoor activities in the summer or are you glued to the air conditioner?

I would like to find a livable city on the west coast that is outdoor friendly.
Thanks
Ken

Outdoor friendly is the word for it--low humidity makes shade more comfortable and the night cool off nicely. There are a few local bodies of water to jump into if things get too intense, and a lot of trees to sit under. You can also escape to the bay or the moutains if things get too intense here in late september and you need a break.

On an average summer you can expect temperatures ranging from the lower 80s to the low 100s over the course of the summer. Of course, some years it gets much hotter, but anything over about a week to ten days over 100 is starting to stretch things a bit. The worst heatwaves may bring temperatures of 110, but I don't think we've seen anything but one day at 108 since the big heatwave in 2006.

Nights range from the low 50s to mid and upper 60s during the warmest nights.

I find it very outdoor friendly, even in the summer. The heat doesn't feel that bad because the lower humidity. Find a lake, pool, or shady area for hiking in the late afternoon when it's hottest. Enjoy a cool evening outside once the sun sets. I love it.

Outdoor freindly? Depends on your tolerance for heat in the summer. Some find it tolerable, as you can see. Others loathe it. The cold, often foggy winters shouldn't be a problem. On summer weekdays I was at work, but jogged before 6:30 a.m., and sometimes played volleyball after 7. On most weekends I spent at least one day hiking up in the Sierra, often with the Sierra Club. Coule leave Sac in the morning, be hiking on peaks 6,000-10,000' by late morning, and be home by the cooler evening. in the winter I could go cross-country skiing for the day (didn't require a full weekend or really long day trip like for people form the Bay Area). Many people headed to the Bay Area. As some said, Sac was great because it was so easy to get to place you'd rather be.

I'm no fan of the heat, but generally I find it outdoor friendly in the dead of summer before noon, and after about 7:00 PM.

The North Central Valley gives you just enough heat (most years) to enjoy then cools off.

Google Delta Breeze.

Yes and no. If you like swimming and boating, its terrific. Most summer days are in the 90s more or less. The California sun will give you a one day tan at no extra charge.
The humidity is very low, which is a pleasant change if you live on the eastern seaboard.
If you dont like heat, you will be miserable as it ramps up in June and cools down in October.
My 2c worth!

On any summer weekend, late morning, you can be assured to pass or be passed by hundreds of people along a 5 mile stretch of the American River parkway (multi-use path)

But if you like to run or hike, either do it in the morning, after the sun goes down, or in the mountains.
