Are there still people actually working as travel agents? This was a career that I thought pretty much was destroyed by online sites like Travelocity and orbitz.

I still use the same travel agent I have using for about 20 years. I have never booked anything on the internet.

When I was in college, my roommates aunt was a travel agent. He would use her letterhead as a travel agent to get fairly large discounts on hotels, car rentals and restaurants. He said that the opportunity to travel really cheap was the primary reason she became a travel agent. I wonder if travel agents still get all of the discounts when they travel on their own behalf?

They often do but they have to belong to some travel agent group (not sure the details) so you can't just say you're an agent to get discounted travel, you have to have a member number. If you travel a lot, it's probably worth it. There are lots of different companies that hire independent contractors and I think there is a $2,500/year fee for using their systems. Often, the $2,500 fees add up to more $$ for the company than the actual commissions for travel.
