Hi, we are moving to Sacramento from the bay area and I am wondering what areas have a decent population of socially liberal residents. We realize that the area will be more conservative than the bay area but an area that is at least 50/50 would be ideal. We found a house in fair oaks that we liked but since its far from the city center we are a little concerned about it being to red for us. Any input is appreciated!

Here is a 2010 election results map by precinct. It maps how people voted on prop 19, a marijuana initiative, the last governors race and the last Senate Race. If you are looking to find neighbors who vote like you this is probably a good place to look.

Interactive map: 2010 election results by precinct - Data Center - The Sacramento Bee

In general I would say that Davis, East Sac, Land Park, McKinley Park and Curtis Park are where the wealthy liberals live. Midtown is Sacramento's gay neighborhood. In Fair Oaks, the area immediately surrounding Old Fair Oaks Village is quite liberal, but the rest is much more middle of the road. West Placer County including Roseville, Rocklin, Granite Bay and Lincoln is solidly Republican as is Folsom, El Dorado Hills.

No where in the world is homogenous as what you suggest. No matter where you live, you're going to find red necks, hippies, liberals, and conservatives.

Go where you want and just be nice to people, you may find you end up liking some conservatives and hating some liberals.

Hi got similar questions.
We are moving 1st week of October this year. Partner is transferring to the FAA site in Rancho Cordova. Need safe, good schools area(maybe kids for ours to play with),fairly democratic ,w/a progressive type church if possible. We attend either the Unity church or Unitarian in our area when we can. Very far away, though. We now live in nice small home/conservative area/good schools. Some ok with us, and many definitely NOT.(We are 2 women with a 3yr old)
We were wondering @ some areas like FairOaks, Carmichael, Arden/Arcade, East Sacramento? We know, if you want good, achieving schools & safe areas they are usually(not always) as lgbt friendly. We understand that and live in that now. We have read that North of the city proper & east into the foothillls are is conservative. Read/heard from people to stay away from south Sac areas, and the flood areas.(a lot of Sacramento, Natomas). Partner going out next week to put down rent $$. We pay @1,200-1300 for our mortgage. Want to keep it close to that for renting if possible.

We were told by her new office co-workers that the good areas for schools/safe are Folsom, Citrus Heights, Orangevale, Gold River, Fair Oaks are best; Anatolia Villiage is cheap to buy a house. They said Arden-Arcade not good, Carmichael ok and East Sac was not mentioned. We are probably going to have to rent an Apt/duplex/townhome or lastly a house first for a 1yr or so, before we buy. We are into more family things like---come over for tea/coffee, potlucks, u-pick farms, the fair, fishing/rockhounding, riding bikes, planting a garden, healthy eating, cool eclectic shops, libraries, living by the Golden Rule,) Not into— TV much, rap music. We may go to the pride parade and would like to meet some other lgbt families for our toddler. There are none where we currently live. But we are NOT into the bar thing at all. We don’t drink/smoke/drugs. We would like an area so our 3yr old will have some playmates, and we would have great neighbors. Please give us some input soon when you can.

Thanks Much.

Who picks an area to live based on political leanings? That seems very shallow and closed minded to me.

If you feel that you might be discriminated against in certain areas, I can see the concern about not living there.

Pray tell what discrimination would someone experience?

Whatever kind they suppose might be there and can find or suppose in their own minds so they have something to complain about.

Sheesh! Only in California!

Sounds like most people understood what the op was asking about. I don't recall anyone mentioning discrimination. But families do like to live in an area where they can have a social life, and feel comfortable in their neighborhood.

shelato nailed it. Fair Oaks or East Sac if you want to be very close to RC. Midtown would be best fit. You would be fine wherever you choose, honestly, but I do understand you are probably searching for the best fit.
