I ran a real quick check on redfin. In the past year there were no 4 bedroom homes that sold for anywhere near 250K in Elmhurst. Right now the only 4 bedroom home in Elmhurst is asking $599K. Honestly if having a four bedroom home is important to you, then Elmhurst is likely out of your budget.

4909 T St, Sacramento, CA 95819 | MLS# 12049109

The four bedroom homes near Elmhurst that you can afford are going to be in Oak Park (see below) . But are you willing to live in Oak Park? Or are you willing to compromise on housing size, or proximity to Elmhurst?

2533 39th St, Sacramento, CA 95817 | MLS# 12037133

3768 4th Ave, Sacramento, CA 95817 | MLS# 12041436

Again I think the best way to figure out what neighborhoods you are interested in is by hitting open houses with 3 or 4 bedroom homes that are selling for under 250K.

I mean you can find this for under $250K in Roseville (but its a short sale).

402 Harlow Ct, Roseville, CA 95747 | MLS# 12041571

or this in Fair Oaks. (needs updating, but the neighborhood should be pretty solid)

5606 Jolly Ct, Fair Oaks, CA 95628 | MLS# 12041811

or this house near Mira Loma.

4311 Rio Vista Ave, Sacramento, CA 95821 | MLS# 12045196

So you have some options for 4 bedroom homes in reasonably safe neighborhoods that you could probably swing, but they probably aren't real close to Elmhurst. Or you can find housing that is big enough for what you say you are looking for, but its in Oak Park. You live fairly close to Oak Park. You seem to have some familiarity with the strengths and weaknesses of the Oak Park. Could you see yourself living there?

Really? I found a 4br in Tahoe Park pretty easily, not too far from Elmhurst and farther from Oak Park.

It didn't show up when I searched on redfin for 4 bedroom homes between $225 and $250K, but you might as well link to the listing.
