Hey! I'm new here. I would sure appreciate your advice if anyone knows the safest route from Sacramento to Kansas. I'm a little nervous about the drive and I'm heading out about noon today. Thank you in advance for any tips you have!

-Lisa

Do you have four wheel drive and all weather tires? If not, avoid the mountains. Drive down towards LA and hop on 40. It might more miles than a direct route but could save you significant time and an accident vs going through the snow and mountains. Good luck.

FYI - don't let your gas tank get low along 40. There can be long stretches with no gas stations.

Where in Kansas?

Keep in mind, they had I-70 closed between Denver and the Kansas state line on Christmas Eve. This is not a mountainy (or even hilly) portion, it's basically flat as a pancake. This flat portion gets closed more often than I-70 through the Colorado Rockies.

Exactly! That way you avoid going over the Continental Divide.

Have you ever seen that movie Breakdown with Kurt Russell?

So the 40 route is a great choice when the weather is foul in the winter. Adds a little time, but worth it during storm. But, totally, completely isolated area 51~ish. Plus, ironically, Albuquerque is actually expecting snow on Monday.

Truckee has a chance of snow tomorrow, nothing big, Salt Lake City, and Denver are pretty clear. Monday day Denver has some flurries, but will be clear by P.M. In CO, the snow dissipates when it hits the pavement because it is dry.

So, to answer your question, which is safest... I am going to say that the best and equally safe route, on account of the lucky weather this week, is 80 to Cheyenne then down through Denver.

HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU!
