Why, do you think the arena is responsible for the uptick in crime?

Is this an inside joke, or is there really some connection to the arena and crime stats?

It's a joke, it would be hard to blame crime on an arena that has not been built yet, although some might argue that the Mayor's hyperfocus on "all arena, all the time" has taken attention away from issues like law enforcement. The police are trying to do the best they can with limited resources and reduced staff, but it's an uphill climb, with a sluggish economy and a lot of parolees adding bad things to the mix.

good morning. I was just talking about this the other day. One thing I noticed since the recession is there seems to be more diversity and community between people of diverse backgrounds. There's also many many more people on the bike trail. I like that because I'm a woman who loves to cycle and I consider that a local treasure of this area. At the same time, I'm seeing a lot more gang colors (bright reds) and also blue bandanas in areas that were typically all white conservative neighborhoods. (college greens, for example). That also goes for midtown neighborhoods like where the coop is and also over near the higher numbers between H and Folsom.

Anyway, I prefer the diversity of midtown. Maybe I'll move to the burbs if I become old and prefer isolation. For now I enjoy being in the middle of all the action.

Exactly. I ride as well and I'm seeing the same increase in gang wear and gang looking folks everywhere (and I want to note I see people of all skin colors and ethnicities looking like this - its not just black people, I see brown, Asian, and a lot of white kids out in the suburbs looking quite gang). Some of this is recession, some of this is the idiot decision to let people out of prison in the middle of a recession - rather than cutting a LOT of the unnecessary spending in the budget of things California doesn't need, like high speed rail (yes, a Proposition passed - but those can be undone), and putting the prisoners to work every day picking up trash or doing something more useful than being crammed in an "overcrowded" jail (never mind that our prisons are luxurious compared to a lot of the rest of the world).

Crime can be cut down upon with officers on the streets and tougher enforcement. The incarceration rate in places like NYC is down because Bloomberg put more cops on the streets. More cops = idiots are less likely to do crime/be stupid.

But we aren't going to have money for officers when we've spent $500 million for a facility and a sport that attracts a lot of the crime/lower class element. I'm still convinced the reason Sac kept the Kings is the area's demographics - Seattle is a much more educated metro, Sacramento, OTOH, is much more ghetto and parts of the area are turning into an Oakland in the making. There are also far more distractions in Seattle making it harder to pack people into an arena to watch a bad basketball team... where you see players not playing hard until its the playoffs - if they get there - and in the meantime, you can watch one NBA player after another get in trouble with the law...

hm, well that was a twist in the gist. lol. I'll take Sacramento over Seattle any day of the week. But that's a whole other thread. LOL

Anyway, glad to hear someone else has seen the same changes in gang activity and I do hate this governor. He was once a progressive from what I've read. See what happens when you get old? you change and not always for the better

um, this governor didn't have anything to do with the Kings deal or the arena...and Brown is still pretty progressive.
