All climate comparisons are going to differ based on elevation, latitude, and other geographical factors. I think Chim's point is simply that most of the entire country has much colder winters than Sacramento. And I think SLC is approximately at the same latitude as Sacramento. How about a broader cross section of the country, including the Gulf Coast and South Florida?

A few other cities for comparison (today's afternoon temps)

Washington DC: 39
New York: 37
Chicago: 6
Minneapolis: 4
St Louis:30
Dallas: 53
Atlanta: 46
Nashville: 37
Miami: 67
New Orleans: 53
Orlando: 60

Closer to home (Sacramento Valley):

Sacramento: 60
Folsom: 63
Grass Valley: 64
Redding: 72
Red Bluff: 68
Anderson: 71

West Coast:

Las Vegas: 60
Redwood City: 66
Los Gatos: 67
Santa Cruz: 69
San Francisco: 66
Oakland: 66
Bakersfield: 59
Fresno: 60
Seattle: 47
Portland: 47
Medford: 43
San Diego: 73
SD (Scripps Ranch - my hood): 76
Los Angeles: 77
Palm Springs: 76

Hats off to SoCal today, but low 70s NORTH of Sacramento and upper 60s in the Bay Area is nothing to complain about either. California is having the nicest weather in the country, although it's disappointing to see Sacramento being the cool spot in the entire Sacramento Valley right now (inversion?). I'm always amazed by how often Redding gets into the 70s in mid-winter, despite being the farthest north. They have very favorable geography for warmth, but then again, their summers are hell on Earth.

Hey mixed-up, wear a hat and gloves.

I see old ladies riding their bikes in midtown in the winter, no complaints, not to mention all the other hundreds of bike riders.

We rode bikes after dark to a Kings Game and to the Elton John concert, it was fine.

These Metros are all slightly larger or slightly smaller than the Sacto Metro

The recent NorCal weather has actually been warmer than average January SoCal weather (66-72f highs in the Sacramento valley, for example, are warmer than San Diego's 65f average). So why does it still seem so cold to you in the upper 60s?

Nope wrong again dude it is way colder here in the mornings and late at night. Been having to crank the heater and wear heavy clothes in mornings. It is nice LATE in the day after noon but WTF I have to be inside and cannot enjoy the few hours of nice weather. Hopefully it warms up in March and we ditch the cold a$$ mornings.

People have been saying left and right today how beautiful it was. Even the airplane pilot said "another beautiful day in Sacramento" before landing.

It's Winter, dress appropriately, layers, man, layers, a long sleeve shirt, gloves when bike riding, shorts are for the other 9 months out of the year. Maybe a pair of boots when it rains. One of those hipster beanie hats goes a long way in keeping your head and ears warm. You lose 50% of your body heat from your head.

I have to say this and its 63F in degrees in Sacramento right now.

What's the big deal about using your heater? Except for the past three days, we've had the heater on every morning and evening for more than a month. I always bundle up at night. Inland SD gets really cold after dark It's the daytime, not the nighttime, that sees the difference statistically. Right now, at 4 AM, we're a whopping ONE degree warmer down here. By 1 pm, we're usually ten degrees warmer. Where in SD did you live?
