Are there any hard stats about how much tule fog Sacramento gets in an average year? Is the 20 year rolling average of this number falling? The reason I ask is that my impression is that it is falling, but I don't know if my impression is accurate.

Sacramento is about 6-8 weeks behind New England regarding when the leaves fall. Our leaves take "forever" to completely fall from the trees. I think because we have such a mild fall and winter.

You will still see leaves on trees in mid-January. The leaves begin falling around Halloween, not a lot, but by Thanksgiving it is noticeable. December is the first month when you see alot of accumulation on the ground and on the streets.

That's a great question. And your impression is accurate. Have you really just now noticed? Tule fog has been near extinct in Sacramento proper for the last 6 years plus. Let me clarify that, in my opinion, it has diminished 90% in size, volume and duration over that last 6-8 years. During the drought I never saw any fog at all in my Sacramento Neighborhood (East Sac). In the last two years, I never saw tule fog (the kind that is on the ground and all around you and the kind of fog that rises up to create a ceiling of overcast has been non-existant for 6-8 years, expect for yesterday and today!

Yesterday that ceiling of overcast type of fog lasted until 10:30am to 1:30pm It was completely gone by 1:30pm, and it made for a very sunny day. Today it never went away except around noon I could see a little bit of blue, but real clearing until around 7:30pm that ceiling of clouds gave way, only to have the rain clouds move in 1 hour later.

I disagree. Growing up there, I don’t think I ever experienced a fog day. Maybe once or twice in 17 years? I’m in the bay area now. Just literally outside SF. Fog is inevitable here. The summer months are not quite as hot as Sac, but they are more humid. Also, a lot of us don’t have air conditioning here so the hot months are really unpleasant. I agree with the OP. Sac is considered the ugly stepsister of other Californian cities (the weather always cited as a main reason) and I don’t think that’s a warranted reputation.

Plus, 5pm or 6 in the summer when those delta breezes kick in.., nothing softer and more pleasant than a bbq or beverage outside with friends and family.

Lot of rain this month looks like next year will be another drencher- no drought at least just lot of rain in next four months to break past records I bet.

The average over the last 6 years - we are above average rainfall, average of 21 inches, normal is 18-20 inches.
We are below average to date on rainfall for these 2019/2020 rainy season.

Some comparisons:

Sacramento - 55/41
Oklahoma City - 47/26 - feels like low temp 19F
Portland - 43/36

Month is not over yet and we could easily get another 2-3 inches this month of rain. I predict next year to be heavy rain.

I am going to predict a record year of winter rain for 2020! I could be wrong but my hunch tells me that 2020 will be record for Jan-April time period.
