The PNW seems to have been having one heatwave after another, with well above average temps. Hence, Portland is back to near triple digits this weekend while inland California remains below average. While this is historically uncommon, we seem to see hotter and hotter summers more often in the PNW and in Northern and Central Europe. London seems consistently hotter this summer than San Diego, for example. Might this become the new normal, where continental climates experience more extreme highs and lows while those of us in the Mediterranean belt stay moderate? And are these historically cooler and wetter places in an even worse place than California to weather droughts and fires? We've already planned for the needed water and fire infrastructure, and many of these places haven't. So it bears watching if California turns out to be the place that weathers climate change better than the more northerly climates. Just a thought.

This hypothesis is only based around summer weather patterns, of course. The PNW endured a long, chilly, dreary spring that lasted well into June.

Sacramento July 2022

Low Temps
How many days of:
50's - 16 days
60's - 15 days

High Temps
How many days of:
100's - 3 days-heat index (6 days actual)
90's - 17 days
80's - 8 days

Interesting, TS, what was the total rainfall for Portland and Seattle last season?

Sacramento's was 92% of normal (near 17 inches). San Diego's was 63% of normal (6.10 inches)

Those Temps sound so comfortable compared to where I live Central Florida. 94F and 62% Humidity at 5PM. Overnight the low will be around 76F and 100% Humidity. The AC gets no rest here. Absolutely uncomfortable outside. Then we never know when Huricannes are going to develop this time of year. I guess out there it's Fires. I would think it would be hotter in Sacramento in August.

You represent why I created this thread; that is, to inform folks of our unusual summer micro-climate.

Sacramento has a very unique climate-micro-climate in the summer that folks within California or even folks just 50-100 miles away are unaware. Our diurnal range of 30-40 degrees everyday from low to high during the summer is very unusual, and allows us to experience many hours of comfortable to down right cool temps everyday throughout the summer.

Portland 67F
Sacramento 67F - Portland is near 600 miles north of Sacramento, yet we still have very similar overnight summer temps.
