My husbands job is relocating us to Vacaville. We are coming from an area with really great schools and I see that Vacaville Highs state rating is pretty low.

So I am thinking that Davis might be a better place to look for a home and school.

But I also see that Vanden High has a better rating than Vacaville. Does anyone know if you have to a military family in order to get into Vanden?

I don't know anything about Vanden, but the schools in Davis are excellent. Its about 20 miles from Vacaville to Davis. Whether its worth the cost and the commute time to go from Davis to Vacaville is something you have to figure out for yourself, but the Davis has some of the best public schools in the state.

Don't dismiss a school just because of a rating. Ratings often measure the economic or racial demographics of a community instead of the quality of the teaching. The people I know who went to Vacaville High were extremely happy with their programs, the great principal and Vacaville high's fantastic school spirit. I recommend scheduling a visit to the school to see if it will meet your child's needs.

From the Vacaville High website: "When you visit Vacaville High School, we hope you will see our family atmosphere, competitive spirit and our commitment to continuous improvement."

Don't know about Vacaville, but lived in Davis and owned a condo there, and worked in Woodland. Also worked at UC Davis for a while. Didn't have kids in school there, as she was already grown, but I really loved Davis. It's hotter than I like in summer, but I love how family friendly it is, very bike-friendly, small university town. I always described it to people as being a little Berkeley wannabe town. Liberal, nice vibe, safe. Great town overall. Even though it's really flat, it's got lots of trees, so is still a pretty town.

Default Vanden High

Welcome to the area! I agree with all the posters that Davis is exceptional, especially since it is a college town, Vaca High has a wonderful reputation and the only school in town with aquatics, and Vanden has a stellar academic reputation. My kids are early 20's, with 1 having attended Vanden and 1 Vaca High. My youngest is a senior at UC Davis and oldest a trained Chef in Napa Valley. I worked as a substitute teacher in most of the local high schools and a former Vanden coach. Just telling you all this to give you an idea of my unique vantage point and the fact that I haven't witnessed any difference in the quality of my kids' education.. Like one poster said, 'visit the schools first." I don't think you'll be disappointed, however I do think you will be much more swayed by the housing market in each of the areas mentioned. That may be more of an issue. And no military affiliation to enroll at Vanden. Hope this helps.
