A flurry of activity this week on car- and ride-sharing. Uber is launching "UberX", and Lyft is also launching. UberX is offerZipcar is adding a bunch of new cars to its fleet here (including a Mini convertible, natch).

Though I bike for about 90% of my trips, my gf commutes to Woodland so we do have a car, but I've still used Zipcar a few times to move furniture and stuff in their SUV (far cheaper than paying for shipping from most places). If she didn't have that commute, I'd love to go car-free. I hope this is indicative of a trend. San Francisco we ain't, and it's still reasonably easy to find parking most places, but for people who only drive a few times a week, this is a good deal. I also like to see some healthy competition with the taxi industry. It's not a free market, with limited permits, over-regulated prices and little accountability. Good stuff!
