So, as a longtime powerboater (and a transplant from Puget Sound), have been realizing lately how much I miss what some of us used to call "gunkholing", or basically just cruising around, exploring, and looking for out-of-the-way places to 'discover', or even anchor/tie-up to overnite.

Obviously the Sacto River and Delta area aren't the same as boating in the PNW, but is anyone here familiar enough to recommend some areas, and nearby marinas, that might provide similar opportunities, even if only for puttering around and cruising between dockside eateries? BTW, about 5 feet of draft is plenty, and the "older", more "rural", "historic" (and "funkier") the better!

You might try posting on the California page. There's a very active poster there who does exactly this. Good luck!

We boat in the Delta all summer. Some of my favorite spots are:
1) The "party" tie up spots are at the American/Sacramento river convergence at Discovery Park Sacramento, and "ski beach" in Stockton
2) Windmill Cove in Stockton is a fun place to get a drink, see live music. Has the backwoods delta feel.
3) Swabbies on the River (Sacramento) is my favorite place to get fish tacos, cold beer, and live music.

Hi mateo45,
I highly recommend heading south on the Sacramento River where you will find the perfect place for cruising and waters like glass for wakeboarding or tubing between Clarksburg and Walnut Grove. Clarksburg is a super small town (a couple of blocks big) with lots of old time charm. You can dock at the Clarksburg Marina (call 916.744.1274) (for super cheap), walk up the ramp, over the levee to the Old Sugar Mill for a full day of wine tasting. Take a bottle or two back with you to your boat to watch the sunset. Or make a pit stop at the Dinky Diner overlooking the river for some yummy grub in a peaceful setting.

Most of the delta has a tidal influence from SF Bay. Water levels are relatively constant within the area.

There's also a great fireworks display on July 4th at Mandeville tip.
