My wife and I have considered moving tonthe west coast for years and are now again revisiting the idea after a recent visits to the Sacrmento area.

We need a fresh start and are looking to get away from the dead and harsh lifestyle of NW PA winters. We never even considered CA and are unsure if this is the place?

We nearly moved to the Phoenix area two years ago but the time was just not good. What we like about the Sacramento area more than AZ is...

1. Green
2. Not as hot.
3. Close drive to beach and mountains.
4. lots to do.

We checked out two areas...Folsom and Rocklin.

Folsom may be a bit out of our price range. My wife is a cardiac nurse and I am unsure what I will be doing?

We were pretty excited about everything until we began reading about the gangs and crime in the area. Is this a safe place to lay down roots and have kids in the pub
Ic schools?

Can you be a little bit more specific about your wanted list?

1. Green, as in lots of trees, mature landscape??
2. What temperature range?
3. What is your definition of close (to beach & mountains)? any specific type of beach? As the beaches in NorCal are significantly different than those in SoCal
4. Lots to do...like what?

I'm not sure why a cardiac RN and spouse could not afford Folsom. I'm an RN (non acute care) & I live comfortably in Folsom.

Since you listed Rocklin & Folsom as your preferred communities, I'm assuming you prefer the suburbs with newer homes, correct?

There aren't very many gang problems in Folsom or rocklin lol. Elk Grove or rancho cordova might be *similar* but more affordable. Eg and rancho and natomas are suburbs that may border areas that are what you are trying to avoid, yet are also removed from such. If you have kids the trouble may come in during high school years when they attend high schools which draw a larger population from wider area (ie elk grove). Coming from Phoenix I imagine you will be familiar with being geographically close to the 'hoodlums yet removed in the sense to where all the S goes down. Anyway, if you don't hang out in the wrong areas then you are all good save for being hit by lightning so to speak.

Rocklin is one of the safest parts of California, not much gang activity at all. I mean, gang members are everywhere, of course, but not in high levels and there's gangs and gangs. Objectively, Rocklin is about the median for crime, meaning half of America has a lower crime rate and half has a higher. However, since crime is very concentrated in specific cities, it's crime rate is more like a quarter of the national average or a fifth of the California average. From Rocklin it goes down pretty quickly. Roseville, for example, has a crime rate that is lower than only 26% of cities in America. Again, due to concentration it's actual crime rate is only 2/3rds of the national median. The national median isn't really what people actually look at, however, they're more often comparing crime rates to other places than the median. I'd possibly be concerned about crime rates and gang activity in Roseville since the crime rate is higher than most of the country, for Folsom or Rocklin not so much. Of course, both are much lower than Phoenix proper. Once you get down into Sacramento itself, it gets even worse than Phoenix is although not significantly. At that point, you're basically picking between the bottom 10% anyway so it's kind of irrelevant. With largish cities like Sacramento or Phoenix with more income diversity than most suburbs have, crime rates also vary more by neighborhood which is another consideration.

1) UC Davis Medical Center
2) Lincoln is a totally different than Folsom, at least from my perspective. Placer county is much more conservative than Sacramento, overall. Both cities are very family oriented, but I think Lincoln is more laid back. Plus, a lot of people live out there because it was one of the newer, growing, affordable cities. COL is less there for housing. I don't hear much about the schools in Lincoln, but Folsom schools are highly rated. Plus, Folsom has a more integrated (with nature) neighborhoods. The topography is far more interesting than Lincoln, and while it does get hot in Folsom, it is always hotter in Lincoln. Since Lincoln is much further away, the commute into the city core is worse...there is no light rail to Lincoln. I believe bus service is limited. Lincoln has limited shopping, mostly big box retailers and a couple of small strip malls, most shopping is done in Roseville. Lincoln would be nice if you work from home.
3) I could be wrong, but I'm not aware of private catholic schools in either of those areas. I've heard of St Francis HS in East Sac. Jesuit HS in Carmichael. Both are highly rated. They get kids from all over the Sacto region going to the schools. I can't believe how far some parents are willing to drive just for their kids to attend Jesuit, but I hear they have an excellent athletic program.

You will find plenty of gang activity in Folsom and Rocklin. Most are white, in their mid 40's. They identify themselves with polo shirts, gut and receding hairline, and frequently speak of "Mi familia homie!" when addressing their 4 children. And be especially cautious of the soccer moms. They'll run you over in a parking lot just as soon as they'd get their nails done .

I love Lincoln, CA. As an Asian male, I often get police escorts when I drive through that area and they see me. . LMFAO.

Sacramento is a beautiful and historic city but you will enjoy the area even if you choose the 'burbs. Good luck in your move.
