Soccer has come to Sacto. Sacramento Republic is a great team and has the finest soccer field in the world according to what I have read in the media.

There is a great jazz club with live music and many fine restaurants.

The river walk view is utterly magnificent. You must have ignored the Delta Queen antique riverboat docked on the river. There is a lovely schoolhouse museum from the Gold Rush era. During the year Old Town hosts a famous jazz festival, the Pirates and Mermaids parade, Gold Rush Days during Labor Day weekend where the entire area of Old Towne is turned into a rootin-tootin wild west carnival style event with several stages of live music, theater and dance.

Gee whiz, who peed in your cornflakes?

Nope, I don't like the cheap T-shirt shops, poor quality fudge and taffy stores but unless the Downtown Business Associations, the Mayor and City Council ever have an idea beyond building the new Kings Arena then Old Town will stay the orphan step-child everyone wants to ignore. I have lived in Sacramento 20 years and live in Midtown but I only frequent Old Town about once a year. The river front has lots of wasted space which needs to be developed but there is no political will to do so. I think West Sac local govt is much more visionary and they will beat the pants off Sacramento to create a better recreational/shopping scene across the river. In about a year or two there will be a trolley connecting downtown to Wear Sac. By then West Sac will be the destination site for entertainment. I think the new Kings sports arena will wind up a sterile, overpriced tourist trap full of over priced bars and a nightmare of gridlock traffic congestion. Mayor Kevin Johnson is a one issue politician whose only interest is racking up massive donations from the 1% to his corrupt slush fund funneled into his bogus non profit educational foundation.

There is a homeless problem along the river and it is now legal to smoke medical marijuana on the street anywhere in California. I never noticed pot smoker derelicts in abundance in Old Town but several of my neighbors in a very expensive neighborhood in posh Midtown smoke skunky funky pot and stink up my entire block.
Even though not impressed by your first two paragraphs as motivation to grant Old Sacramento one more visit, I am definitely with you on your perspective. Right now One Dimensional Johnson and his stuffy council are big contributors to Sacramentos dim image.
