Wal-Mart is planning to build a Supercenter store in the Delta Shores housing and retail development in south Sacramento, company officials said today.

The 190,000-square-foot retail center will serve as the anchor tenant for Delta Shores, a massive project of 5,000 homes planned along Interstate 5 south of the Pocket and Meadowview neighborhoods. The store is scheduled to open in 2017.

Given that two exits down you have Laguna Blvd and Elk Grove Blvd, and all kinds of housing there, does it matter?

Obviously I don't support the fact that Big Business seems to have KJ in their pocket (IIRC Walmart was one of KJs biggest donors), but if we have to have a super walmart in the far end south sac to have a $1 billion dollar downtown arena I'd make that trade everytime.

Now if KJ was pushing to put a super walmart at 20th and K, i'd completely pull my support for him.

Well, it's adjacent to meadowview. Seems a Wal-Mart is appropriate for the neighborhood.

I wouldn't rule out the arena project including some kind of "urban Walmart" considering the close economic relationship between KJ and the Walton empire: Walmart Stores Go Small and Urban | PlannersWeb

So maybe not 20th and K, but perhaps 5th and K.

Public subsidies for Wally's World to "pioneer" their urban stores on Welfare Street?

Wally World coaches their employees to sign up for Medicare and other welfare programs, they all get public subsidy in that regard. And in this case the subsidy works in the other direction: Wal-mart subsidizes the charities and reelection campaigns of the mayor and city council members.
