I know this survey is VERY SUBJECTIVE, but im glad that Sacramento is getting some nationwide recognition. It's also VERY INTERESTING that there's 8 cities from California listed on the top 20 list. This survey is based on diversity, art and architecture, good restaurants, and things to do. (entertainment)

Of course, you have your SF, LA, SD. And then they list San Jose and Oakland. But what surprises me the most is that Riverside and Santa Ana made the list.

I'm actually quite surprised to be honest. I spent 18 years of my early life in Sacramento and now currently reside in downtown LA. I still frequent Sactown to visit my parents about twice a year.

The downtown scene is pretty small and I was surprised at the lack of bars (let's be honest, you can count the number of GOOD dive bars/clubs with two hands)...also surprised how early Sacramento falls asleep. I believe the entire downtown area was DEAD by 11pm on a saturday. Never realized this growing up, but I guess when you go from big city to small city you see the vast differences.

edit: i guess if the list is referring to the greater sacramento area it would make more sense. i know places like roseville are blowing up.

Are you sure you weren't in downtown Lodi? If not, I would get your eyes checked.

I know. Downtown Sacramento seems like its dying. I was out there last saturday and it was kinda dead. Back in 2009 on second saturdays, you could not find parking.

I suppose if I were comparing downtown on a random Saturday to a Second Saturday, you might come to that conclusion, but I trust you realize that last weekend wasn't a Second Saturday. In any case, the grid is WAY more active than it was in 2009. The K St welfare district gets pretty serious crowds these days, in addition to the normal midtown haunts. I don't think most people would claim the opposite. That said, Sac doesn't really have a nightlife district, so it's sort of hit or miss if you're not specifically looking for the active areas. I was just hanging out with a friend at Blackbird after concerts in the park, and the whole area was crowded and lively. Then we wanted to see the jazz band at Shady, so we walked about a mile of almost exclusively calm residential streets before you hit a lively strip of R St. It's a little spread out (which is why I always beg people to learn ride a bike--the grid is definitely scaled to bikes, not walking).
